Meet your new local – The Hive Beauty Bar! Established in June 2019, this funky salon with feel-good vibes has quickly become a popular favourite in the community.
The Hive Beauty Bar is located on Evans St in the heart of the Sunbury township and offers hair styling, makeup, nails and brow services. Owner and master stylist, Sarah, is supported by nail technician Lauren, and together they offer much more than just the services on the salon menu – they offer a warm, welcoming and comfortable experience for all.
Beauty with a difference
From the moment you step into The Hive Beauty Bar, you realise it’s not your regular beauty salon. There’s a fun retro ambience, with music playing from the ‘50s through to ‘70s and vintage posters and beauty articles lining the walls.
“I felt there was a real need to have a salon where people felt like they could relax and be completely themselves,” Sarah says.
“Here you can come in, sit down, have a coffee and we can talk about what you want to do.”

Before Sarah opened her own business, she found she was often uncomfortable in other salons, not having the “perfect” body or hair. It was important that The Hive Beauty Bar would be a safe, comfortable place where people felt good about themselves – and connection with community is key.
“If someone is having a really bad day, we’re happy to give them a hair wash or sit down with them and have a coffee. It’s like a family,” Sarah continues.
“It’s exactly the environment I wanted.”
Sarah’s ethos carries through to the products she uses, which are Australian made, cruelty free and vegan, and the salon proudly caters for all skin types, tones and ages.
Giving back to the Sunbury community
Sarah’s parents built one of the first houses in Goonawarra, but eventually sold it. When she was looking for her first home with her husband she said to him, “wouldn’t it be funny if we bought our first house in Sunbury?”
After one day trip, they fell in love with the area, and particularly the community with their different stories and rich history. She has now lived in Sunbury for 14 years.
A similar serendipitous opportunity presented itself when Sarah decided to open her own beauty salon. After primarily focusing on commercial work – red carpets, TV, events – she thought about how rewarding it would be to work with everyday people that wanted help with makeup. She was walking around central Sunbury when she came across a shopfront where the lease sign had only just gone up, and called the agent on the spot.
Makeup by The Hive Beauty Bar
Now she not only gives back to the community with the inclusive environment she has created at The Hive Beauty Bar, but through regular makeup masterclasses for locals. In these sessions, she shares what’s good for her client’s skin type, and how to put on minimal day makeup through to makeup for the evening. The masterclasses are kept at small numbers, usually two–three people.
“I want to give the client the very best that I can in that small amount of time,” Sarah says.
